HCAG 2011
Writing now in June of 2011, this project has manifested itself as the exhibition, 'recipe for personal pleasure". To view here are some images that were made along the way to the final installation.
Written March 2010:
This exhibition, title yet to be decided, brings together a group of artists who locate the gratification from their practice in the process rather than on a fixed point of outcome or artifact. In each artist's work the dynamic between pleasure, labor and transience of artifact are played out and played with. Each one, in his or her own way, stacks up the inconsequential against the arduous and comes up with a recipe for personal pleasure. This delight is evidenced through both quality and the quantity of the labor and more importantly through the transience of the artifact produced. Usually, labor is justified in an artifact that endures throughout time; only a fool would labor for an artwork that fades so soon. It is this very foolishness that alerts the viewer to pleasure and allows a vicarious tasting of this perverse delight. Underlying project concept: Dave Hickey wrote: "...........art practice is dedicated to maintaining and renewing our ideas of happiness". This declaration of Hickey's is a nice opening for the exploration of the joy experienced when making art works; a celebration of the handmade and the connection with and the value of process with outcome. This is not to suggest that the art maker's objective is to give happiness to the viewer but that the concept of happiness is inherent within art practice. It clearly suggests that the joy experienced in the making of an artwork has the potential to transfer to the viewer of the work.
